#1 Introduction and the Importance of Music

The Importance of Music

My name is Lane Wood, I'm 19 years old and I live in Phoenix, Arizona.
Some hobbies of mine would include, working on my car, learning how to tattoo, and occasionally playing PC games. However, my biggest hobby would be making music with my friends. I'd like to take some time with this entry to share some of the things I've learned about making music and how it's helped me better understand myself.

From full blown metal songs to rap tracks, me and my group of friends have made a wide variety of music. Writing songs is one of our favorite things to do together, however there is so much more to it than simply having fun. As I'm sure many of you can relate, Music was a massive part of my childhood. I was always around it and as I got older it only became an even bigger part of my life, I would, and still do listen to music when I do just about anything.

This love for music is much deeper than simply enjoying the sounds and rhythm alone, It's about the emotion. Every song has a mood, and just about every mood has a fitting song. I want to really focus on the emotional aspect of listening to and making music, and I'd like to start that with a question. Do you ever feel a certain way, or have a certain feeling, and you just can't put it into words? I'm sure we've all had moments like that, I know I had so many moments like that growing up, and still do to this day. Listening to certain songs always found a way to describe how I was feeling, and I always found comfort in knowing that there was someone else who knew what was going through my mind and was capable of putting it into words.

My friends and I all shared a similar relationship with music, and we all had the grand idea to start making our own. Naturally we all picked up guitar as a hobby and went with it, some of us stuck with it for years, others drifted towards more digital forms of music creation, such as producing and mixing beats and instrumentals. And now we've all finally found our own ways to put our emotions into words through making music of our own. There is no better feeling to me than being able to take all of these negative feelings and turn them into art.

Ultimately, I've learned and believe making music as an amazing form of entertainment, therapy, and to those who are really dedicated and talented enough, it can be the start of an amazing career. Thank you for reading through my rant, I strongly recommend giving music a shot as a hobby, you just might learn more about yourself than you think.

  1. Hey Lane! I admire the love that you and your friends share for music. I definitely understand how you feel about it. People listen to songs just to listen. But for us music lovers who really take the time to enjoy every bit of the piece and constantly look for new genres to introduce ourselves to- it is everything. I find it rare to come across people like you who truly dig deeper past the lyrics of a song to find its real meaning.

  2. Hi Lane! Music is my therapy too. I listen to everything, from oldies to rock, to country and hip hop. Music has meanings that people don't know how to talk about. I have so many favorite songs, I can't just name one. Overall, I like how you went in describing your love for music, then your rhetorical question and connecting with your 'audience' then how you decided to start making your own music. I can tell your a good writer!
